- Sketching quickly to capture the values
- Composition
- Painting loose
- Capturing depth and distance
SUPPLY LIST
PORTABLE FOLDING CHAIR, TV TRAY (for supplies) & EASEL
You can paint on your lap while sitting if you don't have an easel.
PAINTS
- The three Primary Colors are red, yellow & blue
- Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolor - Alizarin Crimson (Red), Cadmium Yellow & Cobalt Blue are recommended but expensive. The quality is superb. Bring whatever paint you have.
BRAND of PAINT
- Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors are an excellent, affordable starting point. 10 colors in an introduction set.
TUBES or PANS
- Squeeze tubes are recommended.
- Due to their compact size, watercolor paint pans are ideal for outdoor painting and travel.
PAPER
Approximately 9"12" 140lb cold-press pad or larger is recommended
- Watercolor pads, blocks (gummed together to prevent warping), and no need for board
- 140-lb. I suggest using this paper to make a better outcome. This kind of paper has fewer bumps and valleys.
- 300lb. If you wish to paper that won't buckle, consider cold press. Arches brands are a great option, but they can be expensive. However, they are worth the results.
BRUSHES
- I recommend using synthetic watercolor brushes. Pure Sable brushes are an option but can be expensive.
- Round brushes come in all numbers, #1, #8 & #12 (recommended)
- Flat brushes come in various widths, 1/2" & 1" (recommended)
- Filbert brushes #8 are great for blending portraits and flower petals.
PALETTES
- Plastic - To properly view the colors, use only white palettes. Opt for rectangular palettes with large painting wells that can hold various colors.
- Porcelain plates (optional) have limited dividers and are also a good option for separating each color, and they clean better than plastic plates without leaving stains. You can purchase a Walmart (Corelle)
OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER
A mounting board is necessary to tape the watercolor paper, too.
- Gatorboard or Form board is a lightweight and portable material that can be easily cut down to any desired size, which is highly recommended.
- Two water containers, paper cups will do (one for clean & one for dirty water)
- 2B Pencil & eraser
- Kitchen paper towels (rag cloth or sponge optional)
- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - Did you know that grocery stores sell a particular item to help you remove unwanted colors from the watercolor paper? It's really handy!
- Artist tape or masking tape (1/2" or 1" wide)
- Masking fluid - If there are spots you would rather not paint, you could try using the fluid to keep areas protected. Use color fluid other than white to see the image better (optional)
The instructor will also provide additional supplies as needed.
