April Exhibits: Hinds Gallery: Sheldon Statewide Exhibit: “Meet Your Match”; Dugan Gallery: Association of Nebraska Art Clubs Show

Hinds Gallery: Sheldon Statewide Exhibit: “Meet Your Match”

Sheldon Statewide is an annual exhibition and outreach program through which original artworks from the museum’s collection travel to communities across the state. Since its inception in 1987, the exhibition series has reached 300,000 people in twenty-four Nebraska communities.

The thirty-first annual Sheldon Statewide exhibition, Meet Your Match, poses a challenge that truly mixes things up. A wide variety of objects is presented in pairs that will stretch your mind in unexpected ways. Even if the paired objects seem disparate at first, the “conversations” that emerge between them will spark new ideas and offer fresh perspectives.

Looking at works of art in pairs prompts the act of comparing and contrasting, thinking skills, an easily accessible way to practice critical thinking skills. Visual art provides concrete images and forms to point to and also helps viewers communicate abstract concepts such as emotion or identity. Pairing one work of art with another thatwas created at a different time, from a different material, or with a different subject matter teaches viewers how to recontextualize what they see and encourages them to reconsider their first impressions. Meet Your Match is comprised of paintings, prints, photographs, and sculpture by artists including Ansel Adams, Elisabeth Frink, Gordon Parks, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 6th from 5-7pm. Abby Groth, Assistant Curator of Public Programs at the Sheldon Museum of Art, will be the Guest Speaker at the Third Thursday Luncheon on April 19th.

Over the years, Mara has taught: Basic Art, Sculpture, Advanced Art, Intro. to Theatre, English 10, and Communications at the high school. Her own artwork has evolved as a reflection of skills she has used to impart to her students and covers a myriad of media.

Chris Sell received his BFA in Painting and Photography from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1990. He hung the various art shows and served as a gallery manager and docent for Elder Gallery at Nebraska Wesleyan from 1990-2000. Hornig and Sell met in 1992, over a disagreement about an artists’ work, in Elder Gallery at Nebraska Wesleyan and later married in 1997. Although they commonly differ in their tastes and opinions, they are steadfast in their passion for the creation and deep appreciation of all types of art to this day.
